Privacy Policy

Effective date: July 30, 2026

Scobasoft (“we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the OBD2 ELM327 DTC Reader Android application, package name com.scobasoft.dtcreader (“the App”).

This Privacy Policy explains what information the App accesses, stores, uses, and shares.

1. General Information

The App is designed to connect to compatible ELM327 and similar diagnostic adapters, search for vehicle electronic control units, read diagnostic trouble codes, and clear faults.

The App does not require registration or the creation of a user account.

We do not operate a server that automatically receives or stores your vehicle information, diagnostic results, adapter settings, or communication logs.

2. Information Stored on Your Device

The App may store the following information locally on your device:

  • selected application language;
  • diagnostic adapter type and connection settings;
  • Bluetooth or BLE device name and hardware address;
  • Wi-Fi adapter IP address and port;
  • USB device identifier and display name;
  • custom adapter name or address;
  • vehicle make, model, and notes entered by the user;
  • selected diagnostic protocols, addresses, and scan ranges;
  • detected vehicle control units;
  • diagnostic trouble codes and the latest scan results;
  • application workflow and preference settings;
  • advertising consent and purchase-status information.

This information is used only to provide the App’s functions and restore your settings between sessions.

Depending on your Android device and backup settings, some app preferences may be included in a system backup managed by Android or your device account provider.

3. Diagnostic Communication Logs

The App creates communication logs for trial connections, diagnostic scans, and fault-clearing operations.

These logs may contain:

  • date and time;
  • selected adapter interface;
  • adapter name or address;
  • vehicle make, model, or user note;
  • connection status messages;
  • commands sent to the adapter or vehicle;
  • responses received from the adapter or vehicle.

Logs are stored locally in the App’s media or application storage directory. The App automatically retains no more than the latest 30 communication log files.

The logs are not automatically uploaded to Scobasoft. You may view, copy, share, or delete them using the file-management tools available on your device.

4. Temporary Files

When you choose to request diagnostic assistance from an external AI application, the App may create a temporary text file in its cache directory.

Before creating a new shared prompt, the App deletes previously created prompt files from that cache directory. The receiving application is granted temporary read access only to the selected file.

5. Device Permissions

Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy

Bluetooth permissions are used to discover, select, connect to, and communicate with compatible diagnostic adapters.

Location Permission on Older Android Versions

On Android 11 and earlier, Android may require location permission to discover nearby Bluetooth devices.

The App does not use this permission to request, determine, store, or track your physical location.

Wi-Fi and Internet Access

Network permissions may be used to:

  • connect to a diagnostic adapter through a local Wi-Fi network;
  • load advertisements;
  • obtain and manage advertising consent;
  • communicate with Google Play Billing;
  • open Google search or an external AI service when requested by the user;
  • access Google Play pages.

USB

USB host functionality is used to detect and communicate with compatible USB diagnostic adapters.

Notifications and Foreground Service

Notification and foreground-service permissions are used to display the status of an active trial connection, diagnostic scan, or fault-clearing operation.

6. User-Initiated Sharing with External Services

The App does not automatically send vehicle diagnostic data to an AI service.

When you explicitly request an explanation of a diagnostic trouble code, the App may send or share some of the following information with the service you selected:

  • vehicle make;
  • vehicle model;
  • optional vehicle notes;
  • diagnostic trouble code;
  • diagnostic request command or method;
  • a prepared text prompt.

Supported external services may include:

  • Google Search or Google AI features;
  • ChatGPT;
  • Gemini;
  • Claude;
  • Microsoft Copilot;
  • Perplexity.

When you request assistance in finding vehicle-specific diagnostic settings, the App may share a generated text file containing the vehicle make, model, optional notes, and instructions for researching diagnostic settings.

The transfer occurs only after you select the feature and choose the external service. Once information is transferred, it is processed according to the privacy policy and terms of the receiving service. Scobasoft does not control how those external services retain or use the information.

Do not include confidential or personally identifying information in the vehicle-notes field if you do not want it transferred to an external service.

7. Advertising

The App uses the Google Mobile Ads SDK to display banner and rewarded advertisements.

Google Mobile Ads may automatically collect and share information for advertising, analytics, and fraud-prevention purposes, including:

  • IP address, which may be used to estimate general location;
  • interactions with the App and advertisements;
  • diagnostic and performance information;
  • Android advertising identifier;
  • App Set ID;
  • other device or account identifiers where applicable.

The availability of personalized advertising may depend on your region, device settings, consent choices, and Google’s advertising policies.

The App uses Google’s User Messaging Platform to request and manage advertising and privacy choices where required. When available, you may reopen the privacy-options form from within the App.

You can also reset or delete your advertising identifier through your Android device settings.

8. In-App Purchases

The App uses Google Play Billing for one-time purchases that support the project and remove advertising.

Payment information, such as your bank-card details, is processed by Google Play and is not provided to Scobasoft.

The App may receive and process:

  • purchased product identifiers;
  • purchase state;
  • purchase token;
  • acknowledgment status;
  • locally cached ownership information.

This information is used to confirm purchases, restore purchased benefits, and determine whether advertisements should be displayed.

The current version performs purchase-status processing through the Google Play Billing client on the device and does not send purchase tokens to a Scobasoft server.

9. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal information.

Information may be processed or shared only in the following circumstances:

  • with Google for advertising, consent management, and Google Play Billing;
  • with an external AI or search service selected by you;
  • with Android system services required to provide device functions;
  • when required by applicable law, regulation, legal process, or a valid governmental request;
  • when reasonably necessary to protect users, the developer, or the security of the App.

10. Data Retention and Deletion

Vehicle information, adapter settings, scan settings, and the latest diagnostic results remain stored locally until they are replaced, removed, the App’s data is cleared, or the App is uninstalled.

Communication logs are limited automatically to the latest 30 files. You may delete them manually at any time.

Files stored in an Android media directory may remain accessible after the App is uninstalled on some devices and may need to be deleted manually.

Temporary shared prompt files are removed when a new prompt is prepared and may also be removed when Android clears the App’s cache.

To remove locally stored App data, you may:

  1. clear the App’s storage in Android settings;
  2. delete communication logs using a file manager;
  3. uninstall the App.

Data already transferred to Google or another external service is subject to that service’s own retention and deletion procedures.

Because the App does not create a Scobasoft user account and does not automatically upload diagnostic data to a Scobasoft server, there is no centrally stored user account or diagnostic history for us to delete.

11. Data Security

The App limits access to locally stored information using Android application storage and platform permission mechanisms.

Data exchanged directly with a Bluetooth, BLE, Wi-Fi, or USB diagnostic adapter is transmitted using the capabilities of the selected adapter and vehicle protocol. Some diagnostic protocols may not provide encryption.

Communications handled by Google or other external services are protected according to the security practices of those providers.

No electronic storage or transmission method can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

12. Children’s Privacy

The App is intended for vehicle owners, technicians, and other users performing vehicle diagnostics. It is not designed or directed toward children.

We do not knowingly operate a service intended to collect personal information from children.

13. International Processing

Google and other external service providers may process information in countries other than your country of residence. Their processing is governed by their own privacy policies and applicable legal safeguards.

14. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy when the App’s functionality, third-party services, legal obligations, or data-handling practices change.

The updated version will be published at the same public address with a revised effective date.
